Notably, in his perfectly reasonable call for a global ceasefire to fight Covid-19, UN Secretary-General Guterres did NOT also call for a moratorium on sanctions. But we must.
Furthermore, as Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov correctly pointed out, in any humanitarian aid raised by Guterres’ simultaneous call for a $2b. global fund to fight the virus, there must also be a warning not to use humanitarian aid and medical supplies as an excuse to transform humanitarian aid into “humanitarian interventionism”, that is to say, to meddle in the internal affairs of sovereign countries with the aim of regime change.”
